I am interested in this item due to my disability as I find it extremely difficult to hold a book open & turn the pages like I used to. I would also like to do my postgraduate study and find other ways to overcome my difficulties.

The Sunday Times (8 Jun 08) said that the Kindle would be on sale in the UK "later this year". They quote the US price but I'm guessing, like a lot of things, the UK price will be higher. Personally, I prefer the new Cybook from Bookeen.com.

I believe Amazon is not pursuing the UK version as the $400 sales price only gave them a small margin anyways. I believe it was classic Hype, and they are not selling to well. Why spend a bunch of money to develop the GSM version for the UK when it has already flopped in the US. Actual books are the only form of media that will never be better on a gadget as the kindle.

Personally I'd be quite happy to just require a Wireless network at home for it to connect up to and use to communicate with Amazon, much like my Mp3 player. Connect to pc, transfer books, walk away. :) Why they don't just do this, I won't know.

I've been looking for portable e-book readers that have a "ink" screen for a while. Unfortunately any that do aren't available in the UK. :(

Surely it is not a snub on Amazon's part. Amazon UK most likely has to find a way of providing the same wireless capability within Britain for free; as it does in the US. Look at how long we had to wait for the iPhone and it is only available on O2. Let's hope when Kindle is released here we are not forced to subscribe to one provider for such services.
